Wingman: Creating Awareness and Acceptance
Dylan’s Wings of Change is a foundation established to honor the memory of Dylan Hockley, who was killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School on 12/14/12. The foundation’s mission is to help children with autism and other related conditions achieve their full potential. There are many facets to autism. Those aspects of the condition that present as anti-social or physically uncoordinated can result in a child being excluded from sporting or civic youth activities, missing out on these important developmental opportunities that many children take for granted.
While many organizations have a philosophy of inclusion, they lack an easy framework to educate staff and participants about physical, intellectual and behavioral differences to achieve a supportive environment for all. When we take steps to demystify those differences we open the pathways to acceptance and inclusion.
